February 3, Friday – Galapagos, Ecuador – Sombrero Chino and Sullivan Bay, Santiago Island

Mary came down with whatever is circulating the ship so she slept all morning and into the early afternoon.  Paul was feeling much better so he headed out for the morning for a Zodiac cruise around Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat) Island.

The tenders have been put to good use throughout this trip.

Species list includes:

Blue Heron (hanging out on the boat)

Brown Pelican

Lava Lizards

Sea Lions

Sally Lightfoot Crabs

Marine Iguanas swimming around in the ocean

Blue footed Boobies

Another Blue Heron, this one on the island,

And the Lava Heron

And two new additions to our list, the Brown Noddy Tern

and a Wandering Tattler

In the afternoon Paul took the zodiac out to Santiago Island...

where he went out on a hike on the lava hike.

There were a number of fanciful flows and formations including:

A cabbage rose heart,

A ladder

and a maiden with windblown hair.

He decided that while the lava made for very interesting pictures a hike of couple of hundred yards would have been sufficient.  Jim, on the other hand, enjoyed the entire hike very much.

In the meantime, Mary took a nap in a hammock and then joined a Zodiac cruise in the afternoon where she saw a number of Galapagos Penguins…the only penguin species that has colonies in the Northern Hemisphere

While there we were joined by Jim and Paul's group on their way back from the lava hike.

Our boat headed out around Santiago Island where, from the upper decks, we were able to see the small lake in the middle of the island.

We were even able to see a small flock of flamingos along the edge of the lake.

When we got back to the boat we were all delighted to see that somehow a sea lion had made his way up onto the back of our boat.  So the zodiacs stopped to let us all take pictures.

In the lounge they kept a map of the Galapagos islands and they traced where we have been on this voyage.

Dinner tonight was a barbecue on the upper deck of the boat.  Great Ecuadorian music and much good food.
